How can we get more people to the table? ???

It’s one of our shared challenges: How can we get more people to the table? 

Don’t have a table. Don’t have a meeting. Go do something.

More people will turn out to do something small but meaningful than will turn out for something relatively difficult and not apparently meaningful.

Most meetings, including those “participatory” community meetings, are hard for most people. The timing isn’t great, they’re long, there’s a lot of sitting and listening to other people talk, and there is no clear tie from the meeting to something happening that matters.

It’s that last part that is most damaging: there is no clear tie from the meeting to something happening that matters.

Most action-taking activities are easier for people to say yes to. Timing can be more flexible and can happen more than once. There doesn’t have to be any sitting and listening to people talk. You can see an immediate link from what you are doing to what matters.

So before you focus on bringing more people to the table, think about whether you really need a table at all.
